Area Code 260 History

Area code 260 was one of the original area codes created in 1947. It covered most of northern Indiana, including the cities of Fort Wayne, Gary, and South Bend. The area code was originally split in 1957, with 219 covering the southwestern part of the state and 260 covering the northeastern part. However, over time, the demographics of the two areas have shifted, and 219 is now primarily used for cell phones and 260 is used for landlines.

In 2008, the Indiana Public Utility Commission (PUC) voted to split 260 in two, creating area code 574 to cover the eastern part of the state and area code 219 to cover the western part. This change went into effect on October 21, 2008.

Despite the split, many people in the area continue to use the 260 area code, and there is no immediate plan to change this. If you are looking for someone in the Fort Wayne or South Bend area, it's best to try both area codes.
