Area code 404 is one of the original area codes established in 1947 for use in Atlanta. It served the entire Atlanta metropolitan area, which at the time was just a fraction of the size it is today. In 1995, area code 404 was split, with most of the metro area moving to area code 770. A small sliver of the northwest corner of the metro area remained in 404.Today, the 404 area code covers just over 1,500 square miles and has a population of over 5 million people. It is Atlanta's second-largest area code, after area code 678. 404 is also one of the most densely populated area codes in the country.

The 404 area code has seen its share of changes in recent years. In 2013, 10-digit dialing was introduced in the 404 area code, and in 2016, a new area code, 678, was introduced for the northern half of the metro area.
