Area Code 530 History

Area code 530 was one of the original area codes created in California in 1947. It originally covered the northeastern corner of the state, including the counties of Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, and Trinity.In 1950, area code 415 was created to cover the San Francisco Bay Area, and area code 619 was created to cover the San Diego area. This left 530 covering a large, sparsely populated area.

In 1984, area code 916 was created to cover the Sacramento area. This left 530 covering a much smaller area, including the counties of Lassen, Placer, Plumas, and Sierra.

In 1998, area code 530 was split, with the western portion becoming area code 909 and the eastern portion becoming area code 707. This left 530 covering the counties of Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Tehama, and Yuba.

In 2001, area code 530 was reduced to its current boundaries.
