The Details of Area Code 616

616 area code is one of the area codes in Michigan. It covers Grand Rapids, Lansing, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, and most of southwestern Michigan. The 616 area code was created on January 15, 1947. It originally covered the entire Lower Peninsula of Michigan. In 1997, the 269 area code was created for the western portion of the Lower Peninsula, and the 616 area code was reduced to its current size.

The 616 area code is now in the process of being overlaid with the 651 area code. This will result in 10-digit dialing throughout the 616 area code region. The 651 area code will cover the Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Battle Creek metro areas, as well as most of southwestern Michigan.

The transition to 10-digit dialing will take place in late 2019 or early 2020. Until then, you can still dial 616 area code numbers using 7-digit dialing.
