Area Code 681 History
Area code 681 is one of the original area codes established in 1947. It covers the southwestern corner of the state of West Virginia, including the cities of Huntington, Charleston, and Beckley. The 681 area code has had a long and varied history. In the early days, it was used for the entire state of West Virginia. However, as the state grew, it became clear that a single area code was not sufficient. In 1998, area code 304 was created to serve the eastern portion of the state, leaving 681 to cover the western half.
Today, the 681 area code is in the midst of another transition. In February 2016, it was announced that area code 614 would be overlaid on 681. This means that the 614 area code will be used for all new phone numbers in the 681 area code region. Existing numbers will keep their 681 area code, but will be required to dial 1 plus the 614 area code to reach them.
The change is not scheduled to take effect until late 2017, so there is still time to prepare. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to contact your local telephone service provider.
