In 1951, area code 612 was created to serve the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area, and most of the southern portion of the original 701 area code was split off to create area code 218. The western portion of the original 701 area code, including the cities of Minot and Bismarck, was split off to create area code 701 in 1957. In 1995, area code 701 was reduced to its current size when most of the eastern portion of the original 701 area code was split off to create area code 701.
