Area Code 737 History
Area code 737 has a long and interesting history. It was created in 1957 as area code 214, and covered the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In 1991, area code 214 was split, and area code 737 was created to serve the Austin area. For many years, area code 737 was one of the fastest-growing area codes in the country. This was due in part to the explosive growth of the Austin area, but it was also due to the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. In the early days of area code 737, there were only a few thousand phone lines in the entire area code.
Today, area code 737 covers a large area of central Texas. It includes the Austin and San Antonio metro areas, as well as a large rural area in between. The population of area code 737 is now over 7 million people.
Despite its large size, area code 737 has maintained a relatively stable number of phone lines. This is due in part to the growth of VOIP and cell phones, and in part to the fact that many people have moved from the Austin area to San Antonio.
Area code 737 is now in the process of being overlaid with area code 561. This will be the second time that area code 737 has been overlaid, and it is expected to be completed in 2019.
