This split largely coincided with the growth of the city of Chicago, as the 773 area code includes the city and its surrounding suburbs.

Despite the split, the 847 area code has continued to grow. In 2017, the 847 area code was split again to create the new 224 area code. This split was largely due to the growth of the suburbs in the south and southwest suburbs of Chicago.
